Dechert has boosted its London finance and banking practice with the hire of Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe structured finance partner Jim Waddington. Waddington, who specialises in capital markets and derivative transactions for banking clients, joined Orrick’s London base in 2002 from the Paris office of New York firm Proskauer Rose.

With Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe this week pulling the plug on a merger bid with SJ Berwin, the question now is whether the UK firm pushes on with its efforts to secure a US merger. As best as can be gathered, it was never quite as simple as a two-way discussion with Orrick. As Legal Week reported in February, the City law firm had identified a small list of US firms – including Orrick – with which it intended to explore whether to pursue a transatlantic deal. Two other firms definitely on that list were Boston’s Goodwin Procter and New York’s Proskauer Rose.

SJ Berwin and Baker & McKenzie have taken lead roles on HSH Nordbank’s sale of a stake in a portfolio of private equity fund investments, a deal that values the bank’s total 47-fund portfolio at €620m (£549m). SJ Berwin was instructed by Germany’s Nordbank, a longstanding client of the firm, and fielded a team led by funds partner Nigel van Zyl, who is set to leave the firm with a team of associates to join Proskauer Rose. SJ Berwin’s City team worked with Munich funds partner Sonya Pauls on the deal.

SJ Berwin is set to lose a team of funds lawyers in addition to the two partners exiting to join Proskauer Rose. The resignation of the team of associates, who are moving to the US firm alongside departing partners Nigel van Zyl and Oliver Rochman, will be seen as a further blow to the top 20 UK firm, which is especially well-known for its heavyweight funds practice.
