Latham & Watkins has strengthened its Paris corporate practice with the hire of two partners from Debevoise & Plimpton – including the co-head of the US firm’s Paris arm Patrick Laporte. Laporte and fellow corporate partner Pierre-Louis Clero both joined Debevoise in 2005 from Linklaters, where Laporte had been a partner for six years. Both advise across a wide range of public and private M&A, joint ventures and commercial agreements, acting for industrial clients including companies in the media and advertising, telecommunication, transport, energy and finance sectors.

Allen & Overy (A&O) has boosted its Paris M&A practice with the hire of a trio of lawyers from US firm Debevoise & Plimpton. The team, which is led by partner Marc Castagnede and includes senior associates Dan Taieb and Olivier Thebault, joined A&O yesterday (21 March), bringing the total number of partners at the magic circle firm’s Paris office to 30 and the number of M&A partners to seven.

There is still something of a frisson – a sense of the unusual – about seeing the name Debevoise & Plimpton attached to a notable London appointment. The firm’s recruitment last month of Travers Smith’s David Innes was no exception. The reason is obvious. Despite a pukka Wall Street brand – backed by average partner profits currently in the $1.9m (1.22m) region – for the last decade the firm has been content to haul in a strong but unflashy UK partner hire as pretty much a once-a-year event.

Wall Street leader Debevoise & Plimpton has boosted its City corporate practice with the hire of Travers Smith private equity partner David Innes. Innes, who has been a partner at Travers since 2000, specialises in private equity and M&A, and has worked on several high-profile transactions including Bridgepoint Capital’s 955m sale of Pets at Home, the 6.15bn merger of Saga and AA, as well as 3i’s acquisition of retailer Agent Provocateur.

Debevoise & Plimpton is set to roll out a mini-MBA scheme for first-year associates in its London and New York offices. From this September, all first-year associates in Debevoise’s two main offices will receive four weeks of intensive training in how to solve legal problems in a business context, as well as receiving an insight into the perspective of the US firm’s client base.

Mayer Brown has strengthened its London corporate and securities practice with a hire from Debevoise & Plimpton. Colin Scagell joined the international firm today (5 September) as the newest partner in its London-based insurance industry group. He joins from the City office of Debevoise, where he was an associate.

Debevoise & Plimpton and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett have picked up lead roles on AIG’s sale of its life insurance business in Taiwan to a Hong Kong-based investment company. Primus Financial will pay $2.15bn (1.35bn) to acquire AIG’s Nan Shan unit, Taiwan’s third-largest life insurance company by total premiums.
